Ill-fitting shoes can cause an array of foot health problems, most commonly:

Athletes foot

This is a fungal infection that enjoys a dark, warm and moist environment and can be caused by hot and sweaty feet. Wearing breathable shoes will help alleviate this problem.

Corns

A concentration of hard skin often caused by pressure from poorly fitting shoes. A properly fitted shoe can help prevent these.

In-growing toenail

This can occur when the big toe is pressed into the second toe and can be very painful. Shoes that are the fitted to the right width will give toes the space they need, and so in-growing nails are much less likely.

Blisters

These are common with sweaty feet and back-to-school new shoes and are formed when skin layers separate and fill with fluid. Correctly fitting shoes will stop the rubbing that causes blisters to occur in the first instance.

Bunions

This is a painful inflammation of the big toe joint where the joint can enlarge and displace the toe. Shoes that are fitted correctly to the shape and size of the foot should keep bunions at bay.
